Apollo Sunguard Receives Prestigious Award from American Academy of Dermatology

Sarasota, FL—Apollo Sunguard Systems, Inc. has received the prestigious Gold Triangle Award from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).

The Academy bestows the Gold Triangle Award to recognize and honor public service accomplishments, and industry and media efforts, among other organizations, that further the understanding of dermatologic issues as well as encourage healthy behaviors in the care of skin, hair, and nails.

Apollo Sunguard Systems, Inc. received the award in recognition of its unique “Play In The Shade” program that utilizes “sun-safe” playground shade structures, making Apollo the first shade structure company ever to receive the national award.

Kevin Connelly, President of Apollo Sunguard Systems, Inc., acknowledges the significance of the award: “We are delighted that the American Academy of Dermatology has recognized the unique effectiveness of our patented playground shade structures.” He adds: “Our commitment continues beyond our PlayTowers™ to the general population with the goal of providing cost effective shade precisely where it is most needed in order to protect children and adults from ultraviolet radiation and heat injuries and letting them have cool fun while in the sun!”

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends 93% UV protection or better over play areas, recognizing approximately one out of every five children in the US will grow up to have some form of skin cancer. Recent trends are showing a significant increase in skin cancer in younger adults and adolescents.

Mr. Connelly expanded on the health threat in a recent speech in Sarasota County: “There are 500,000 playgrounds in US parks and schools, the majority of which offer no adequate UV shade protection. And 60% of the daily UV radiation reaches the earth’s surface between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM—the exact time during which our children are outside and playing on many of those playgrounds.”

The Gold Triangle Award will be presented to Mr. Connelly and Apollo Sunguard Systems, Inc. during the 2008 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, February 1-5, in San Antonio.
